Media and Internet: Tools for the New Evangelization

"For the new evangelization to be effective, it is essential to have a deep understanding of the culture of our time in which the social communications media are most influential. Therefore, knowledge and use of the media, whether the more traditional forms or those which technology has produced in recent times, is indispensable. Contemporary reality demands a capacity to learn the language, nature and characteristics of mass media. Using the media correctly and competently can lead to a genuine inculturation of the Gospel."
- Pope John Paul II, "Ecclesia in America" (January 22, 1999)
Various types of media can be utilized:
Direct Mail: Catholics Come Home has a brochure entitled “We Miss You” which can be used as a mailer (see links for outside
and inside of brochure). It has been used in the Corpus Christi and Sacramento dioceses. The brochure combines a real
invitation, reasons to come back, quotes from people who have already come back and questions that they can identify
with. The brochure would invite them to go to the Catholics Come Home website or whatever event they wanted to fill in on
the back. The brochure is printed by the Paulist Evangelization Ministries and they have this and other evangelization
literature (including other brochures) on their site. Quantity discounts and some financial resources are available through
the Evangelization Commission for parishes seeking to utilize this resource. Contact Bob Trussell of the Commission for
more information.
